Tim and Kit Kemp, owners of Firmdale Hotels will open The Whitby, their second New York hotel in the heart of upper midtown Manhattan on February 27th 2017. The Whitby Hotel is a celebration of contemporary art and design. It will have a stylish restaurant, bar and conservatory as well as a colourful library, several private event spaces and state-of-the-art cinema. LOCATION
Situated in the heart of upper midtown Manhattan on West 56th Street at 5th Avenue, The Whitby is surrounded by world-class department stores, luxury designer boutiques and is a short walk to Central Park and Broadway. The Whitby is also on the doorstep of some of New York’s leading restaurants, galleries and museums, including MoMA which is just a couple of blocks away.
ROOMS & SUITES
The Whitby Hotel has 86 bedrooms and suites over 16 floors, each designed by Firmdale Hotels’ owner and design director Kit Kemp, in her award-winning contemporary English style. Each room has its own bold colour scheme, floor to ceiling windows, some with a private terrace. Bathrooms are beautifully designed in granite or marble, complete with a free standing bath, double basins, walk-in shower and RikRak by Kit Kemp luxury bath products.
The hotel’s top floor is dedicated to the spectacular Whitby Suite, with two master bedrooms, spacious drawing room and two furnished terraces.
THE WHITBY BAR
The Whitby Bar is a rich, colourful, airy room with high ceilings, an impressive 30 foot pewter bar, beautifully upholstered banquettes and grey oak floors. Tall warehouse-style windows and doors lead through to a sunny orangery with vaulted ceilings and skylight, bathing it in natural light.
The bar is characterised by a collection of hanging baskets originating from different areas of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. There is a story behind each one and every basket has a particular purpose. The orangery displays a spectacular wall of 40 beautifully crafted vessels lit from within, each with a different landmark New York building or bridge etched into it.
The Whitby Bar offers all day dining from a frequently changing menu revolving around the freshest seasonal ingredients and showcasing the best local produce. It’s open all day every day from 7am for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner as well as morning coffee and evening cocktails. A traditional afternoon tea is served throughout the day.
